My M17x Configuration

One of the NBR members sent me a PM asking me to detail my system configuration since I am one no longer seeing the issues described as Stuttering on the M17x.

I put together the following and decided to post it here as reference in case others were interested in how I have my system configured and wanted to compare it to their own config.

CPUID HWMonitor updated to v1.15

Well, it's been 6 long months but we finally have an update to HWMonitor. This update includes some nice changes which were previously only visible in the Pro version.

We also can now see HDD temps on the M17x :) Nice indeed. Note, if you are running RAID you will not be able to see HDD temps - HDD temps are now only visible if you are not in RAID.

Here are the change notes:

  • Batteries monitoring : voltage, capacity, wear and charge level
  • Support for Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) mainboards series
  • New sensor chips : Fintek F71808E & F71869, Nuvoton W83795G

    Dell releases Synaptics Touchpad v14.0.12.0

Today Dell posted an updated Synaptics Touchpad driver. Details as follows:

  • Disable scrolling feature as default setting
  • Corrects Alientouch compatiablity in Windows 7
  • Driver Lists have been updated. Direct link is HERE.

NOTE: The disable bug is again present in this release. If you use an external mouse it will throw an error when trying to access the Touchpad properties. They really neeed to resolve this. The default Microsoft driver can be used as an alternative.

    NVIDIA SLI Profiles Update (MODDED)

One of the only highlights for the failed 195.55 BETA release is the fact NV added new SLI Profiles as well as several updates to existing profiles.

Since the driver does not install without modding and even after install it is a fail with the M17x, I was still interested in using the SLI Profile Updates. Extracting them turned out to be a simple matter.

If you are not using nHancer, then this is a great option as it will add proper support for Borderlands, MW2, L4D2 and others. This will tie us over until NV releases the Official SLI Profile Update #4.

You can grab the batch update HERE.

Be sure to read the IMPORTANT - README file for notes.

NVIDIA posts beta driver 195.55 - EPIC FAIL

Today NVIDIA posted the 195.55 Beta. For the M17x it will not install - no small surprise. C'mon NVIDIA - time to get your game on and NOT leave out the Alienware M17x.

  • Adds GPU-acceleration for smoother online HD videos with the new Adobe Flash 10.1 beta.
  • Adds support for DirectCompute with Windows 7.
  • Adds support for OpenGL 3.2.
  • Adds support for OpenCL 1.0 (Open Computing Language).
  • Adds support for CUDA Toolkit 3.0 features and performance enhancements.
  • Adds SLI and multi-GPU support for many top new gaming titles including Borderlands, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, FIFA Soccer 10, and more.
  • Includes numerous bug fixes including improved performance for Need for Speed: Shift.
  • Installs NVIDIA PhysX System Software v9.09.0814.

  • TESTING NOTES:
  • HybridSLI is functional and pulling the AC Power Cord will automatically kick you into 9400M G mode only (if you have Hybrid and Integrated Graphics enabled in the BIOS of course).
  • L4D2, TF2, MW2 and others are running fine in SLI with this driver.
  • ISSUE #1: BluRay playback is again not functional. Same issue was present with 187.xx. You can work around this issue by unchecking the option in PowerDVD to disable Aero for BluRay Playback.
  • ISSUE #2: If you are running SLI your second GPU will not downclock properly after ending a 3D Gaming session. Clocks for GPU #2 will remain @ default (583/950/1450) whereas GPU #1 will return to 200/100.
  • ISSUE #3: Uninstaller is broken. When accessing the Programs & Features Control Panel to uninstall, the display driver option is missing. You will need to uninstall each display adapter via the Device Manager.

The only + side to this release so far has been the updated SLI Profiles. Given the issues found, I cannot recommend this driver for use with the M17x. I will not be adding it to the lists. Back to 186.82 for me.

If you are as tired as I of these sub-par drivers NVIDIA has been churning out or tired of the fact that 186.81, 195.39 and now 195.55 (which are all part of the NVIDIA Verde Driver Project) have NOT installed properly on the M17x, I ask all of you to provide feedback on these issues. In fact, since the M17x has been released, not one driver NVIDIA has published has worked correctly. Please take a moment and report the issues - HERE.
  • The 9400M G

I've received a few questions on the 9400M G and whether or not I have it enabled. Figured I would post this here for everyone.

The 9400M G can be a very handy asset in the M17x's arsenal. By switching to the 9400M G chip when on battery, your battery time will increase significantly.

NVIDIA has made this easy for us with Hybrid SLI. Essentially, all you have to do is unplug your AC Power and you will automatically switch over. Once you return to AC Power, your Discrete GPU(s) will enable and power up. For most users, this is fine and there are no issues associated with this switch.

I have chosen to disable the 9400M G via the M17x's BIOS. This is done by disabling both Hybrid Graphics and Integrated Graphics.

When I know I will be off AC Power for an extended period of time (off site meetings, travel, etc.), I will re-enable both Hybrid Graphics and Integrated Graphics in the BIOS in order to take full advantage of the battery using the 9400M G as the active GPU.

I choose to disable the 9400M G for for two reasons:

  • The current drivers (be it Dell's releases or the 186.24, .82, 91 releases), seem to get along better when the 9400M G is disabled. Benchmark runs I have conducted usually score higher with it disabled. I also would rather not see the chip under more load than is needed.

  • When the 9400M G is enabled, as the OS is loading the Windows Log in screen, there is a distinct flashing/refreshing of the screen. The screen can flash/refresh several times before loading. With the 9400M G disabled, this is not an issue.

Following is a description of the Hybrid Graphics & Integrated Graphics options via the BIOS:
Hybrid Graphics - Disabled / Integrated Graphics - Enabled:
M17x will use the integrated video card only. Video output to external displays will be disabled.

Hybrid Graphics - Disabled / Integrated Graphics - Disabled:
M17x will use the discrete video card(s) only. Regular SLI mode will be available for systems with 2 NVIDIA discrete video cards.

Hybrid Graphics - Enabled / Integrated Graphics - Enabled:
Hybrid SLI will be enabled. Maximum performance available.
For additional info on HybridSLI and the underlying technology, see the following:

  • NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI Tech brief (1.26 MB PDF)

  • NVIDIA's HybridSLI Video

Basically, it all boils down to personal preference. I just wanted to share my reasons for having it disabled while on AC Power. If you feel you want to keep it enabled, then of course, please do so. This is not a critical issue.

Revisiting the Stuttering Issue on the M17x

First, let's define 'Stuttering' as it relates to the M17x. One of the chief complaints from some users (not everyone is having issues) has been the intermittent FPS drop off while gaming. In-game you may see your FPS drop to sub 10 for a few moments, after this momentary loss of FPS, FPS will again climb to normal. Audio popping/crackling while playing back audio has also been reported and can be associated with this 'Stuttering' issue.

The steps below have worked for me on Vista 64 and a few others have reported this has also worked for them. This may work for you, it might not.

    1. Disable the following startup items (use CCleaner's Startup Items module for fast access or use MSCONFIG):

  • AlienFXController.exe - this startup item is responsible for your system lighting. You can still access it by launching the AlienFX Controller via the start menu ---> Programs ---> Alienware. Once you have made your lighting changes be sure to shut it down again by right-clicking on the alienhead and choosing EXIT.
  • FATrayMon.exe - this is your AlienSense Facial Recognition startup item. It displays the little icon in the task tray for quick launch of settings. Not necessary.

    2. Disable the following Services (Note: When editing services, always access the services console by typing 'Services.msc' into the Run Command):

  • AlienFusionService - This service is responsible for the GUI tie in of the Command Center Fusion Module and the OS's Power Profiles. You can make changes via the Power Options Control Panel instead. All this module does in Command Center is provide a nice fancy GUI to the OS's power profile settings. It is not required.
  • FAService - This service is required for AlienSense (Facial Recognition). Since it's a resource hog, kill this one as well (needs to be killed since you have already disabled its startup tasktray item).
  • Windows Search - This one is totally unecessary. This is a component of the OS and responsible for indexing your hard drive to provide faster file searches. If you don't use CTRL-F to locate files on your hard drive, kill this one. Most of us know where are doc, music and pictures are anyway.

That's it. This should help with reducing stuttering. After making the changes above, I have had zero stuttering in-game and no audio playback issues (Windows Media Player). It should also be noted, for audio playback - disabling the use of Visualzations in your Audio player app can also reduce any stuttering.

Concerning Startup Items, one of the major tweaks you can perform to Vista or Windows 7 is by eliminating (disabling - don't delete them, lol) unecessary startup items. Some of these may include (depending if you have the relative software apps installed) the following:

  • ehtray.exe - Windows Media Center - disabling will have no effect on your ability to launch Media Center manually
  • acrotray.exe or ReaderSL.exe - Acrobat/Adobe Reader - not necessary to view PDFs
  • AdobeARM.exe - not necessary
  • PDVD8LanguageShortcut - PowerDVD language module - again, not necessary for playback of DVD/BluRay Media
PDVD8Serv.exe PowerDVD Remote Control - again, not necessary and will not effect remote control functions (at least none that I can find)
  • BDRegion/BRS.exe - another component of PowerDVD. Again, not necessary for playback of DVD/BluRay media
  • SunJavaUpdateSched - Java update Scheduler. You can check for Java Updates manually via the Java Control Panel. No reason to have this launch @ startup
  • WindowsDefender - if you use an aftermarket AV/Security solution, this is also not necessary. I have always disabled it and have had no ill effects

This is only a partial list. Everyone will have different startup items based on the applications installed on their system. Always use Google Search and research the startup item you are thinking of disabling. Make sure its not a critical component.

I also suggest using CCleaner's Clean & Registry functions on a regular basis. I usually run it every other day - takes moments to run and will remove lots of temp clutter.

    NVIDIA Issue:
With the newer releases of the 186.xx series driver, NVIDIA's Stereo 3D Vision is installed by default. There is a known memory leak issue with this and a fix is supposed to make its way out. Personally, for me, I wont be using it so I haven't paid attention to this memory leak issue and its supposed update. It may be a non-issue with the 19x.xx drivers - I don't know. Best to uninstall it if you don't need it.

Remember, the steps I posted here are not a FIX but a work-around. I prefer to keep my system running well and do not need a facial recognition app (or any other unnecessary app/service) running on my system hogging resources.

That's it for now. Hope this helps some of the newer users out there who may be seeing the 'stuttering' issues described at the start of this post. If it hasn't helped you or you don't want to try it for whatever reason - well, all I can say is either return your system, sell it or accept it.

EDIT: Be sure to also see this post as it may help answer additional questions.
  • Clarification on Driver Lists

Just wanted to clarify so there is no confusion on this. All of the drivers with the exception of the Display Drivers are from Dell. For the most part, all of them are released specifically for the M17x. There are a few which are released by Dell for other models, however they are compatible with the hardware in the M17x. The Display Drivers will either be from NVIDIA, Dell, Windows Update or LV2Go.

The driver lists will always remain up to date. I check various sources daily and will list new drivers as they are released.

The driver lists for the M17x which Dell maintains on the support page do not always include drivers released for other laptops with the same hardware/devices. Meaning, if a driver is updated on say the Precision M6400 for the Bluetooth card, Dell may fail to categorize the driver for use with the M17x even though the driver supports the M17x since its the same Bluetooth card.

Hope this helps. Just want to make sure people are not under the impression I am modding every driver for use with the M17x. ;)

    187.66 and the M17x

As some of you know, LV2Go posted up the Fujitsu-Siemens 187.66 driver a several days back. The stock INF does not support the GPUs in the M17x and the modded INF had issues with the M17x Hybrid SLI, BluRay playback, etc.

You can use this driver with the M17x however a few changes have to be made. I have chosen to use the 186.82 Windows Update driver with the 187.66 release but you can most likely use the 182.91 INF if you want to.

Here is the process if you want to try this driver:

  • Open up the 186.82 INF (nv_whql.inf)
  • Open up the 187.66 INF (nvfm.inf)
  • Look at the DriverVer entry in the 187.66 - this entry is at the very top of the file, a few lines down. Once you have found it, copy the entire line.
  • Now, find the same line in the 186.82 INF. Overwrite the line with the line you copied to your clipboard.
  • Once the change has been made, save the changes and place the file in the 187.66 directory.
  • Next, copy the nv_whql.cat file from the 186.82 directoy.
  • Finally, remove the original INF and .cat (nvfm.inf and nvfm.cat) from the 187.66 directory - you do not need them.

That should do it. Do a clean install of 187.66 after performing an uninstall of your current driver.

Be sure to install in Hybrid Mode (enable the 9400). You can disable it after install if that is how you run your system.

    EDIT:
An issue did come up during my testing:

  • Deal Breaker: The NVIDIA Control Panel will not retain settings for individual game profiles. I prefer to set all of my game profiles to 'Single Display Performance Mode' rather than the default of 'Multiple Display Performance Mode'. You can make the change and then click APPLY, however once the NV Control Panel is closed and re-opened the changes will revert. This should not be an issue for users of nHancer. Not sure since I do not use nHancer.

Due to the NV Control Panel 3D Game Profiles issue, I am choosing not to add the driver to the Driver Lists. Back to 186.82 for me.

Dell releases 186.64 NVIDIA display driver (Vista/W7)

Thanks to Douglaz over @ NBR for the heads-up on this release.

Today Dell posted the 186.64 WHQL display driver. This driver is a WHQL certified driver and can be used with Vista and Windows 7. This driver also includes the current version of PhysX. As always, when installing a new display driver, be sure to install with Hybrid Graphics and Integrated Graphics enabled in the BIOS. I have added this driver release to the Current Vista / Windows 7 driver pages.
Note: My recommendation for install is as follows:

    1. If you have Hybrid Graphics / Integrated Graphics disabled in the BIOS, reboot and enable. If they are already enabled skip to next step.

    2. Uninstall the NVIDIA Display Driver ONLY using the Programs & Features Control Panel. Reboot the system.

    3. Once you are back at your desktop, reboot into Safe Mode using the F8 Key @ BIOS screen). (The reason why we boot into the desktop and then exit/reboot again is that the OS needs to install the Standard VGA Adapter driver for each GPU - just to keep the install clean).

    4. Once in Safe Mode, run DriverSweeper and scan for NVIDIA DISPLAY files ONLY. Remove any found. Next, open CCleaner's Registry Scan Module. Fix any left over registry entries from the Display Driver uninstall. Once complete, reboot normally.

    5. Once you are back at the desktop, run the 186.64 installer. Once install is complete, reboot.
    Direct Download Link

I am currently testing all compatibility aspects (wake from sleep, AC to Battery Hybrid functionality, etc.) of this driver and will add my findings later. So far, no issues and the driver is very stable with the same low thermals.

    Win7 Drivers Updated!

Just came across a few updates for Win7 and the M17x. Dell posted the following:

    - NVIDIA MCP79 Chipset v2.05
    - Dell/AW Broadcom 1510 Wireless v5.30.21.0
    - Synaptics v13.2.4.12
    - ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver v5.1.0.1

*Also posted (for another system but will work with the M17x):
    - Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module v6.2.0.9600 A01, Last Updated: 10/15/2009

I have updated the Win7 Driver page with these new versions. Currently, we are still waiting for an official Win7 Display driver and Webcam driver. I'm guessing we should see these posted shortly so check back often.

Side note: The Broadcom Wireless driver includes support for Vista 64 so I have updated the Vista Driver page as well.

    Enjoy!

    Command Center v2.0.10 released (Win7/Vista)

Thanks to Scook9 over @ NBR for the heads-up on this one. Dell posted v2.0.10 of Command Center today. Fixes include:
    AlienFX
    - Fix: Power State options work ok when Fn+F11 is Enabled.
    - Fix: For M15x new LED mapping for the Keyboard zone
    - Fix: Command Center title is now visible after Intro animation.
You can grab it directly HERE.

    IMPORTANT NOTE:
This version of Command Center uses a different .xml structure for the AlienFX themes. Themes created with the previous version will not load.

Also, some users (including me - lol) have encountered issues with updating to this new version of Command Center. Here is the process which I used to properly install and resolve the issues:
    1. Uninstall Command Center via the Programs & Features Control Panel.
    2. Reboot
    3. Run CCleaner's registry module and clean out all left over traces.
    4. Reboot
    5. Run the installer for the new command center. Now here is the important part (and dont ask me why this is, but it is and its how I was able to resolve the error), SHUTDOWN the system after the installer completes - instead of restarting, SHUTDOWN.
    6. Power up and everything should be fine.
I have updated both the Vista and Win7 Driver lists. Enjoy.

Earlier this week I decided to run some benches using 3DMark06 and Vantage. When I launched the apps I received a wonderful error message stating COM SURROGATE had failed.

    Resolution:
After coming across a few suggestions via Google to remove any Nero apps, I decided to uninstall the Nero Suite installed by Dell/AW. Process used:

    1. Uninstalled the Nero package which came with the M17x
    2. Ran CCleaner's Registry clean and removed all entries found from the uninstall
    3. Downloaded and ran Nero's General Clean Tool which found leftover files from the uninstall
    4. Rebooted
    5. Installed 3DMark06 and Vantage

This corrected the issue. As to why I was able to run 3DMark06 and Vantage previously *with* Nero installed I really have no clue.

Konig over @ NBR mentioned he was able to work-around this on his m15x by doing the following:
Fixed it by renaming NeVideo.ax and NeVideoHD.ax to NeVideo.ax.bak and to NeVideoHD.bak respectively. You can find these files in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\
Either way, it certainly appears there is an incompatibility with Futuremark's SysInfo and Nero. Something may have changed with the MS Windows updates which were released on 9/8 - I have no idea. Oh well.

Fix for Intermittent Stuttering/Laggy Startup/MP3 Playback Popping

    Background:
Several owners have reported intermittent stuttering in-game which results in a severe drop in FPS. Wireless connections suffer delays when auto-connecting @ startup as well as popping during MP3 playback have also been reported.

I believe I have identified the offending items (AlienwareFusion Service and the AlienFX Controller - both are components of Command Center). This 'fix' has not been tested on Windows 7 however I can report it has worked for me under Windows Vista.

    Solution:
    1. Disable the AlienFX Controller @ startup (I use CCleaner's Startup items function since its a quick way to access Startup items).
    2. Stop and set to Manual startup the Alienware Fusion Service.

Reminder, when making changes to Services always do so by typing 'Services.msc' into the Run command. Never make changes to Services using the Services tab within the Task Manager.

    Downsides to this fix:
    1. If you need to change your lighting just launch AlienFX Controller from the Start Menu ---> Programs--->Alienware --->Command Center. Once you have finished your lighting changes, right click on the AlienFX icon in the task tray and choose Exit.

    2. When switching to battery power, you will need to manually kill your lighting if you want it off. It will not power off/Go Dark since these two items are not running. As with changing your lighting, you will need to follow the steps to 'Go Dark' as outlined above.

Hopefully these issues will be resolved in the next update to Command Center.

    186.91 now available

Another Windows Update release... 186.91 is now available. As with 186.82, HybridSLI is again fully supported. I have not had a chance to run any benches, but if this one is anything like 186.82 it will be a keeper.

    Grab it direct from Microsoft:
    Win7/Vista 64-bit
    Win7/Vista 32-bit

    LV2Go has also posted 186.91.
    Win7/Vista 32-bit
    Win7/Vista 64-bit

NOTE: You will need to run the executable to extract it. Once the driver is extracted, look inside the directory for the 'Additional INFs' .zip archive. Extract this and copy/paste the 'nv_whql.inf' into the top level of the 186.91 directory. Once this is done, run the setup.exe app to install. This is required for the driver to recognize the hardware in the M17x. The default INF (nvfu.inf) does not support the M17x GPUs.

Update: 186.91 was released roughly 10 days after 186.82. 186.91 also offers complete support for the M17x's HybridSLI setup. After a bit of testing, it is my opinion the 186.82 remains the better choice at this time. 186.91 produced slightly lower benchmark numbers compared to 186.82. I also noticed slightly higher temps (idle and load) for the 9400 mGPU. Again, this is just my opinion and I will be staying with 186.82 until the next release. You should conduct your own testing of course. Have fun!

    NVIDIA SLI Profile Update #2

NVIDIA has posted their second SLI Profile update.

    Version: SLI PROFILE UPDATE 2
    Release Date: 2009.09.03
Operating System: Windows Vista, Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows XP 64-bit, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 7 64-bit
    Language: English (U.S.)
    File Size: 0.237 MB

    This update adds support for:
    Biohazard 5 (Resident Evil 5)
Call of Juarez: Blood in Bound Demo
Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim
    Need for Speed: Shift

This update also provides increased performance for:
    Batman: Arkham Asylum

Please note, the release specifically states:
This version of the NVIDIA profile update should be used with v190.62 WHQL display driver.

Since I do not own any of these games I am unable to test compatibility with driver version 186.82 which, at present, is the best performing driver for the M17x.

If you download this SLI Profile update and find reduced performance with 186.82, the best way to remove the update will be to uninstall the 186.82 driver completely and then reinstall 186.82.

    Essential Apps (all freeware)

I've compiled a list of the main apps/utilities I use and recommend. I see multiple posts in the forums from new owners asking what monitoring app to use, etc. This list should cover all of the basics.

    1. HWMonitor - a small app used to monitor CPU/GPU temps. It should be noted that HWMonitor will require a bit of tweaking for proper reporting of CPU temps. Once you launch HWMonitor for the first time, it creates a config file. If you have a P8600, P8700, T9600 or T9800 CPU in your M17x you will need to open the config file using notepad and edit the following line:

    CPU_0_TJMAX=

Change the default value of 100.0 to 105.0. This will ensure HWMonitor is reporting the correct temperature of your CPU. For the Q9000 the TJMAX value can be left at default and no editing is required. I am still trying to locate the TJMAX value for the Q9100 and QX9300 CPUs. Once you have made the change in value, save the file and then open the file properties by right-clicking on it. Change it to a 'read only'. This will prevent it from being overwritten by the app the next time it is launched. Don't ask me why this is...

    2. Auslogic's Disk Defrag - a very fast alternative to Vista's own Disk Defrag

    3. GPU-Z - a lightweight utility which can be used to check clock speeds of your GPUs. Note: some of the info from the main window will be missing or reported incorrectly. This will hopefully be fixed in a future update. Still a great utility to verify your current clock speeds.

    4. CPU-Z - another handy utility from the makers of HWMonitor, this little app will display info on your current CPU clocks/multiplier along with info on installed RAM, etc.

    5. CCleaner - of all the registry cleaning tools I have tested, CCleaner is the safest and most effective of the bunch. This one I use almost daily to ensure the registry is free of old/non-essential entries. It can also be used to quickly access and enable/disable startup items.

    6. Recuva - another top app from the makers of CCleaner, this utility can be used to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer, memory cards, mp3 players, etc. If you've ever accidentally deleted an image from a camera memory card and needed to recover it, this is the app to have installed.

    7. ExtractNow - is a great compliment to Vista's built-in .zip archive support. I use this one for all the .rar files I encounter. It supports the following formats: ZIP, RAR, ISO, BIN, IMG, IMA, IMZ, 7Z, ACE, JAR, GZ, LZH, LHA, TAR and SIT. I leave .zip archives to Vista, but the others are handled by ExtractNow.

    8. Notepad++ - This is one of the best freeware source code editors I have ever used. This little app is essential when it comes to modding INF files and other formats. It also features a very handy built-in 'Compare' feature.

    9. Stardock's LogonStudio Vista - this cool app is a lot of fun. You can take any .jpeg file and turn it into a Vista Logon screen. I will be posting a few Alienware M17x logon screens I have put together and this will be required if you want to try them out. Take a look, this app is great. Did I mention the app does not have to be running in the background? Launch it, set your Logon Screen and hit apply. That's it.

There you have it - my recommended freeware app list. If I think of any others I'll update the list.

186.82 - So far, the best...

Well, yesterday was fairly eventful in the M17x realm. We had a 186.81 driver release direct from NVIDIA. 186.81 installed without issues and was quite stable from a 2D perspective. HybridSLI was functional as well. After finally being able to get in-game and test this release I found what a lot of people had also reported... horrible performance. I encountered quite a bit of stuttering in Valve Source Engine based games. This killed it for me.

Shortly after the 186.81 driver was released, LV2Go posted a news post confirming that 186.82 had been located on the Windows Update site. I have always disregarded Windows Update GPU drivers in the past as I have typically found they were more of a compatibility driver than a performance driver. Not this time...

This evening I finally had a chance to download the 186.82 from LV2Go. As with 186.81, typical everyday tasks were quite stable with no issues. Temps were well within the normal M17x range (ice cold) ;). HybridSLI also had no issues and for the first time, pulling out the AC adapter automatically placed me into Save Power Mode. No more manual switching when going on DC power. Another plus! In-game performance was right on the money and I did not encounter any stuttering as I did before with 186.81.

I also cannot confirm this but the 'wake to a black screen issue' seems to be gone. This may have had something to do with the updates Dell posted (A02 BIOS and OSD update). It doesn't really matter I guess - as long as its fixed. :)

If you haven't already given 186.82 a test drive, I encourage you to do so. Download links appear below.

    From Laptopvideo2go.com -

    Vista 32-bit

    Vista 64-bit

NOTE: You will need to run the executable to extract it. Once the driver is extracted, look inside the directory for the 'Additional INFs' .zip archive. Extract this and copy/paste the 'nv_whql.inf' into the top level of the 186.82 directory. Once this is done, run the setup.exe app to install. This is required for the driver to recognize the hardware in the M17x. The default INF (nvfu.inf) does not support the M17x GPUs.

    Sleep Mode and the M17x

I have found that using sleep/suspend mode on the M17x has been problematic at best. Most of the time when waking the unit up, I am greeted with a blank LCD and no way to work around it short of a hard reset (holding down the power button). I have observed this behavior with 179.85, 186.12 and the 186.24 drivers. I know from past experience this is almost always a display driver issue.

There is currently no work around to this that I can find. I have tried disabling the 9400M G (motherboard GPU) prior to putting the system to sleep (via the FN+F7 command) has met with poor results. Sometimes it will work and wake properly, other times it will not.

I will be testing the current line of drivers (190.xx) series this weekend. I plan to disable the mGPU (via the BIOS) and install the 190.40 driver from xfastest.com and see how it fairs. If sleep is still an issue, then I'm going to label this as a severe problem. If the unit enters and exits sleep mode without issue then it will confirm its poor driver implementation.

Bottom line, my opinion is this: A laptop is used for portability. If you cannot put the unit to sleep and transfer it to another location (i.e. conference room to office, etc.), then what is the point in having a laptop? One of the selling points to the M17x is the integrated GPU (mGPU). The mGPU provides greatly enhanced battery time but at what cost? A non-functioning sleep mode? Not acceptable in my book.

I can only hope that Alienware/Dell resolve this issue soon. If this is truly the 'All Powerful' laptop, it should function properly out of the box without having to cripple certain features. Most would agree.

More to follow on this 'bug'.

Unable to update Vista to SP2

Out of the box you may encounter an issue updating Vista to Service Pack 2 via Windows Update. All required updates can be downloaded yet Windows Update may fail to present SP2 for download. The cause of this issue remains unknown.

To fix this and update to SP2 manually:

    1. Download the Five-Language stand alone 64-bit installer from Microsoft. If you need the All Language stand alone installer, grab it HERE.

    2. Run the installer.

    3. Once installed, from a command prompt (or via the Run Command in the Start Menu) type Compcln.exe. This will remove all left over temp files from the SP install. Be aware you wont be able to uninstall the SP once this step is performed, but who cares about that? ;)

An alternative to the stand alone installer is to do a clean install. Entirely up to you.

    M17x and Dell 186.24 Driver

Just finished tweaking the INF for the Dell released 186.24 driver. The driver was released for the XPS M1730. The driver did have support for the 280M and 260M however it did not provide support for the 9400M G.

I have added the support back in and it should now work with the M17x and you shouldn't have to disable the 9400M G at time of install.

I've included a modded INF file for use with the 186.24 driver only as well as instructions on how to install. You can grab this from: HERE.

Thanks to Mandrake of NBR for testing out the changes.

UPDATE (8/22/09): Please note, tonight while playing TF2 I noticed something interesting. After exiting the game (only played for about an hour) I checked HWMonitor to see how temps were doing. Temps were fine except I noticed that GPU#1 was running a bit warmer than GPU#2 - about 7 degrees warmer. I opened up GPU-Z and noticed that GPU#1 was not downclocking at all. It was locked at default clock speeds where as GPU#2 was sitting @ 200/120. I kept an eye on it for about 15 minutes and the clocks did not change. I ended up hitting FN+F7 to switch off the discrete GPUs and then re-enabled them. Clocks returned to normal, both downclocked properly.

This tells me that PowerMizer is not functioning properly with driver 186.24. Keep this in mind if you are going to test this driver.

We really need a new driver release from Dell/NVIDIA. *SIGH*
