Hi and thanks so much for compiling and sharing all this info on the m17x. I downloaded the PhysX update, but not the beta driver and strangely enough, I am having the same issue as you were with one gpu not downclocking. The reading on GPU-Z is at 583 MHz. My driver version is 186.64 (I think this is the same driver it shipped with) and I have two 280M's. It's odd that you were having this problem from the driver update, and I'm having it from the PhysX update. I havent yet figured out how to uninstall the PhysX update but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually :)

Ellen, you can uninstall PhysX via the Programs & Features Control Panel. I dont recall 186.64 having a GPU downclocking... not sure.

Have you tried the 186.82 driver (see the driver list pages)? Seems to produce the best overall results. Also be sure to run the SLI Profile Updater (can also be found here on this blog) if using any of the 186.xx series drivers.

Hey :) Thanks for your quick reply. I installed the 186.82 driver, as well as ran the SLI Profile updater. It still seems like its running hotter than usual. Mind you, I'm not very good when it comes to the technical aspects of a computer... so I'm probably not explaining this very well. It could very well be that the computer is hotter than usual because of all the installing & uninstalling I've been doing.

Thanks again for everything you do. Reading through this blog has helped me out with so many of my m17x's problems... actually, it has helped with them all :) I'm sure I've become your #1 fan ;)

If your M17x has dual discrete GPUs (x2 260Ms or x2 280Ms), its not unusual to see a slightly higher temp reading from GPU#2. Using HWMonitor, GPU#2 typically runs anywhere from 2-5 degrees warmer than GPU#1.

Elevating the back of the laptop will help as well. If you are seeing a temp difference higher than 5 degrees consistently, then as you mentioned, either GPU#2 is not downclocking properly or there is a possible hardware issue. Using 2 instances of GPU-z will be able to confirm a downclocking issue. If both cards are in fact DC'ing properly and a temp difference is still registering, you might want to contact Dell support.

Multiple uninstalls/installs shouldn't play a factor in thermal differences - at least not a prolonged difference ;)
